A town built on the site of an ancient settlement. Kassiopi flourished during the Roman period,
chiefly on account of its geographic position overlooking the sea pass.
In ancient times there was a sanctuary to Zeus here, on the site now occupied by the 16th century
Panagia Kassiopitissa. The ruins of the town's castle, dating from the 14th century,
can be seen on the hill.
